I am a fan of food. I have always been a fan of food, for as long as I can remember. Now, that is not to say I am some manner of connoisseur or food expert. I have no formal training in food, no vast knowledge of exotic ingredients, nor am I a regular at any particular fancy restaurants in town. No, I just like food.
As a suburbanite, I grew up with my food growing in cardboard boxes on the shelf of the local grocery store. Until very recently, I had no direct involvement with my food prior to the point it entered my home, or more often, it entered my mouth. Fortunately, I recently began working a plot at the Benson Community Garden, and since then, I've been hooked. Our first crop of radishes, peppers, and scallions came in last week and now I'm sold.
One of the previous residents of my current duplex apparently thought it would be a good idea to put a big planter box in next to the house. It has been largely neglected since then, though, and until today it was overgrown with weeds. It was something of an eyesore to everyone who drove by, and also a waste of a perfectly good planter. So, I've decided to convert this waste of space into food by way of a (mostly) organic vegetable garden. In the months ahead, I hope to document everything from the planting to care and maintenance to harvesting, and then will document the most important part of food, consuming it. Specifically the various ways to prepare the fruits of our labor.
Realize I am coming into this as a rank amateur, with little gardening experience prior to the past two months. My knowledge of the In's and Out's of growing food is limited, and organic gardening even less so. I am more familiar wielding a keyboard and mouse than I am a rake and shovel. Please feel free to offer suggestions, tips, or your own personal stories.
Let the gardening begin!
